Montpellier Métropole has earned its label as the 41st “Grand Site Occitanie” Sud de France, alongside other major attractions in southern France such as Pic du Midi, Pont du Gard, Cirque de Gavarnie, Rocamadour, and Cité de Carcassonne.

Occitanie regional authorities granted the label on December 11, 2020, after evaluating the file submitted by Montpellier Métropole.

“The Grands Sites map was incomplete until now. We remedied that", says Carole Delga, president of the Occitanie Region. She adds: “This is a proud achievement and a major boost for attractiveness and economic development for Grands Sites Occitanie / Sud de France.

A label with many benefits

The goal of the Grands Sites label is to reinforce economic, tourist-related, and cultural attractiveness for territories. It ensures international promotion of certified areas as destinations, enabling them to receive Regional subsidies. In short, there are only benefits.

Application submitted during the summer of 2020

The result of coordinated partnership work with the Departmental Tourism Agency, Occitanie Region, and the Tourist Office, the application was guided by a common desire to promote the metropolitan area’s assets, such as sustainable tourism notably based on ecomobility, and its highly diverse offering combining both historical and natural heritage, with its diversity making the area a unique destination of choice.

A land of art and history

Like an amphitheater facing the Mediterranean seashore, Montpellier Métropole had already earned the “Pays d’Art et d’Histoire” label (Land of Art and History), featuring salted earth and fresh water, stretches of plains and marshes, rolling hills and valleys, historical heritage, and contemporary architecture.

A destination offering many types of stays

The Grands Sites Occitanie / Sud de France label provides greater exposure for local diversity, as well as for the living and production spaces comprising the territory, also boosted by the French Tech Metropolis label, while highlighting the destination that is located less than two hours from ten other Grands Sites Occitanie / Sud de France areas, including La Grande Motte, Sète, Nîmes – Pont du Gard – Uzès,  Canal du Midi – Béziers, Agde – Pézenas, Aigues Mortes – Camargue Gardoise, and Gorges de l’Hérault.

This rich offering complements the many trails, paths, and other attractions offered in and near Montpellier Métropole’s 31 cities. It is a way to prepare for tomorrow’s ecological and responsible tourism by offering stays that combine both outdoor leisure activities and culture. Welcome to our home!
