Dwarf Animation Studio takes on its first full-length film

Information updated on 20/06/18
Dwarf Animation Studio, subsidiary of the Septeo group, has been chosen by the California-based Cirrina Studios to produce a full-length animated film called The Extincts. The project is scheduled to last 27 months, involving up to 130 people. This propels the Montpellier studio into the major leagues.
The project marks a major achievement for Dwarf Animation Studio (formerly Dwarf Labs). The Montpellier studio is getting ready to work on its first full-length animated film. Produced by the American group Cirrina Studios, based in California, the film is entitled The Extincts, and is scheduled for release in theaters for Christmas 2019. Production will involve up to 130 people at peak times. Dwarf Animation Studio staff is expected to reach a total of 220 people in the summer of 2018.
Dwarf Animation Studio was founded in 2010 by Olivier Pinol, a recognized specialist in image creation who had previously worked at DreamWorks in the United States. Two years later, the Montpellier studio joined the Septeo group, which brought the resources needed to reach its goals. Company highlights include strong ongoing investment in R&D, proprietary technologies, ongoing training, and an industrial approach that respects artistic gestures and artisan methods.
“We associate French culture with the American business model,” summarizes Olivier Pinol. Having produced several television series (with the 4th currently in production), the Montpellier studio is ready to step up to the next level. “We are going to develop a veritable creative campus, with a training center and shared R&D department,” explains Olivier Pinol. With 1,200 sq. meters of office space at the Septeo site in Pérols, close to Montpellier, Dwarf expects to progressively increase the surface area it uses. The company is also counting on Montpellier’s attractiveness to convince investors. “Here, we benefit from the same quality of life as in California, with a strategic position in Europe, one hour from Paris, one and a half hours from London, and two hours from Barcelona. There is also a particularly dynamic ecosystem here for creative industries, with major players such as Ubisoft, Dell, and IBM, and projects such as those taking place at Montpellier’s EAI space. People watch Montpellier.”
