Bloom Pictures is one of the creative and cultural gemstones in Montpellier. Founded in 2018, the 3D animation studio united five talented producers, each around 20 years old and having gotten their start at the Illogic collective in Paris. Released in 2016, their first short film, Garden Party, was a triumph at festivals and won 70 awards out of 300 selections. Crowning its career, the film was nominated for an Oscar in 2018 in the Animated Short Film category.

“The nomination opened the doors to Hollywood production, such as Pixar, Dreamworks, Disney, Lucas Film, and Fox Studios, as well as Facebook, Google, and Apple. We met many fascinating people,” recalls fondly Théophile Dufresne, the company’s CEO.

All graduates of the prestigious MoPa animation school in Arles, France, the five friends decided to take on the entrepreneurial adventure together. Destination: Montpellier. The wisest choice, according to Théophile Dufresne: “It is located in southern France, not really very far from Paris. There is an international airport and several schools with programs in our field.” Not to mention Tropisme Hall, where Bloom Pictures set up its offices when it opened in 2019, notably to immerse itself in the ecosystem of Montpellier’s cultural and creative industries.

A second animated short film: Maestro

The young partners focus on their main activity, realistic 3D animation featuring animals for advertising, with their partners Wizz Design (Paris), Friends (London), and Blacklist (New York). They are also preparing collaborations with the animation studio The Beastmakers, also located in Tropisme Hall, while planning to reach into the pool of Montpellier’s animation schools to hire new talents. Their staff already includes fresh graduates from the ESMA Higher School of Applied Arts.

The quintet also continues to create fictional film works. Following its latest short animated film, Maestro, released in September 2019 and already selected for dozens of festivals, they are preparing a full-length project with Watch This Entertainment, a production company based in New York.

“It will be a long-term project, lasting several years, to create and produce a full-length animated film. We are working on writing the scenario at this point,” says the CEO of Bloom Pictures.
