Creative Campus inauguration

Information updated on 26/10/21

After the cornerstone was laid for the Cocon building in July, it’s now time to inaugurate the Creative Campus! A flagship site for Cultural and Creative Industries, it will train future players in this foundation sector for the Montpellier area.

Inauguration du Campus Créatif

Located right at the heart of Montpellier’s Creative City, the Creative Campus – designed in collaboration with Montpellier Métropole – is the first campus in France to unite four schools and over 1,000 students involved with Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI) topics, such as animated images, video games, audiovisual, and film. Dedicated to teaching, the Campus is open to artist exhibitions and events related to digital arts, music, and live shows.

Led by Karim Khenissi, who founded the ESMA school in 1993, this pan-European project unites several schools in the Icônes network: ESMA, IPESAA, ETPA, and CinéCréatis. Its inauguration today represents real progress for Montpellier’s positioning as a reference area for CCIs, as the Campus creates unique bridges between the academic world, industry, and employment, an undeniable asset for economic development in our territory.

The inauguration was organized with a press conference on September 16, 2021, with Michaël Delafosse (Mayor of Montpellier and President of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole) and Karim Khenissi, General Manager of ESMA. Also present on the stage were: Josep Lluís Mateo (building architect) and Maarten Van der Voorde (city planner for the Creative City).

Goals for the Campus

The Creative Campus seeks to become a site filled with life, a warm space where people feel particularly comfortable working, living, and sharing. This new showcase was designed to welcome public audiences in its 600 m² modular hall, which can be turned into an exhibition area to bring culture to as many people as possible.

“Trained with a project approach that is both specialized and cross-functional, our French animation talents are in high demand by the largest international studios, whether for their creativity or their ability to work in different areas of the discipline. For example, major studios were present on September 10 at the Esma job fair in Montpellier, notably: Netflix, Mikros, Cube Creative, Skydance Los Angeles, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Sony Pictures Imageworks, and Warner Bros. Opening its doors today, the Creative Campus represents a wealth of qualities and competencies that will be developed,” exclaims Michaël Delafosse.
