The “Coeur de Ville en Lumières” sound and light show is the first event in France to mobilize students from local schools and partner them with industry professionals, thereby promoting training in the digital creation sector.

Coeur de ville en lumières
For two nights, on Friday and Saturday, November 25 and 26, Montpellier’s city center welcomed more than 200,000 visitors and moved to the rhythm of this unforgettable event. The most beautiful facades of Montpellier’s historical buildings were highlighted by light and music, including the Arc de Triomphe, Préfecture, Saint Roch Church, Fabre Museum, Opera Comédie, St. Pierre Cathedral, Cour de l’Agora...

Once again this year, Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI) professionals shared the stage with students from the city’s schools, showcasing both recognized talent and aspiring young people!

With more than 200 talented students from the city’s visual arts schools, 15 different scenographies, and 10 projection locations, this flagship event featured six local schools (ArtFX, ESMA, e-Artsup, Studio M, Objectif 3D, and BRASSART) and four companies (Timothé Toury, B.Digital Events, CS Prod, and ID Scènes).

The Cœur de Ville en Lumières light show marks the opening of the holiday season in downtown Montpellier. Other events begin the very next day to continue illuminating and livening up Montpellier!

Cœur de Ville en Lumières is also part of the ICONIC festival, the Montpellier Métropole area’s new Cultural and Creative Industries event.

Exposure for CCIs in Montpellier

The Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI) sector combines art and technology, creativity, and digital technology. It represents nearly 2,500 jobs in about 850 establishments in the region, and annual sales of €300 million (figures from the sector’ 2021 business survey conducted by Montpellier Métropole). It still has considerable growth potential and offers skilled job opportunities for young people.

Many training programs are offered in Montpellier enabling students to acquire the skills and understanding of the increasingly powerful tools for creating animations, video games, sound, special effects, virtual reality, and more.

Energy efficiency, a major focus for the 2022 event

The energy consumption for a video mapping onto historical buildings is 15Kw/hour including video projectors (30,000 lumens) and the sound system. In comparison, a typical concert consumes 75Kw/hour.

Furthermore, the event was reduced in length to two days with respect to previous years and the service providers selected for the event undertook various actions to compensate for the environmental impact of their services, such as financing the planting of trees, using ecologically responsible materials and low-energy technological equipment, among others.

One of the service providers also sponsors beehives in order to help preserve bees through the association “Un Toit Pour Les Abeilles” (A Home for Bees).
