Le fablab montpelliérain LABSud fait le plein de makers
Welcome to the LABSud manufacturing workshop – or fab lab – where people use digital tools to invent what they want. On Saturday, October 6, the Montpellier fab lab celebrated six years in activity at its 270 m² facility in the Millénaire Office Center, in the presence of Chantal Marion, Vice President of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole in charge of economic development, higher education and research, innovation, French Tech, artisan trades, and urban planning.

We have about 500 members and 50 companies,” explains Yann Lefebvre, CEO of LABSud.

Beginning makers can use LABSud equipment including 3D printers, a CNC milling machine, a vinyl-cutting plotter, a 3D scanner, laser engraving and cutting tools, while also discovering electronics and digital embroidery. Companies use the facility to study and manufacture their prototypes, such as the open-source waterway monitoring unit that BRL designed with LABSud.

Mobile Fablab

“There is a lot of activity at this time, with many places now planning to integrate fab labs,” adds Yann Lefebvre. “For example, the Lattes Health / Independent Living Cluster has contacted us. We are also in talks with INRA about training researchers.”

LABSud recently obtained certification as an authorized training center. The facility has also been involved as a technical partner in the “Humanlab” project on handicaps, inaugurated on October 13 at the Institute Saint-Pierre in Palavas, just south of Montpellier.

LABSud also has a mobile fab lab project – a fully equipped motor home that was at the Montpellier International Fair from October 5 to 15. Laureate of the Fab Region competition, the mobile fab lab is expected to begin touring around the Occitanie region in France in early 2019. LABSud will relocate to the future French Tech Hall planned by Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole for the Cambacérès district in 2020. The move will place the fab lab at the heart of a cluster entirely dedicated to innovation.
