On January 21, Riot Games made it official that Montpellier would host the LEC finals in 2023 - the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) League of Legends championship. This worldwide e-sports competition will be held at Montpellier’s Sud de France Arena in the fall of 2023.

Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole and Occitanie Region will welcome the world’s top competitors at the Sud de France Arena for the League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC) 2023 finals. This is the EMEA zone’s largest international e-sports competition. This planetary event is organized by Riot Games, which chose Montpellier and the Occitanie Region, again demonstrating renewed international recognition for the territory, with its particularly dynamic Cultural and Creative Industries sector, particularly for video games.

League Of Legends represents the largest multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) and one of the world’s most popular competitive games. Available in more than 20 languages, it attracts millions of players every year. In the EMEA zone, the LEC event is the most prestigious League of Legends competition. A real high-point in the year for e-sports fans, “League Of Legends LEC finals 2023” will be held in the Occitanie Region, at the Sud de France Arena in Montpellier. This fall, the finals will feature a face-off between the three top teams in the presence of an ever-growing audience. The 2022 LEC Summer Playoffs held in Malmö, Sweden, attracted nearly 20,000 people from dozens of different countries to attend the two-day competition.

With its many companies of all sizes, internationally recognized training programs, and many associations, Montpellier and the Occitanie Region offer a fertile ground for Cultural and Creative Industries. Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole and Occitanie Region are particularly mobilized to help support growth for this major sector in the territory, notably participating in the organization of key events for game enthusiasts, such as Occitanie Esports Montpellier, the 5th edition of which was held in December 2022.

“We are proud to welcome the League of Legends LEC Finals in Montpellier and the Occitanie Region. This planetary event unites the young generation throughout the EMEA zone. Organizing these finals confirms our deep commitment to two major players in the Cultural and Creative Industries sector. The presence of this event in our territory will help showcase our video game ecosystem and its community, one of the largest in France and the EMEA region,” highlights Michaël Delafosse (Mayor of Montpellier and President of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole) along with Carole Delga (President of the Occitanie / Pyrénées-Méditerranée Region).

“The LEC finals are the year’s main e-sports event in the EMEA region for Riot Games. It is therefore the ideal opportunity for League of Legends Esports fans to come admire the very best players,” adds Alberto Guerrero, EMEA Esports Director for Riot Games. “France benefits from a vast and loyal LoL Esports fan base. We are thrilled to come back to this country for the first time since 2017 to hold our flagship event in Montpellier. The proposal by the city and Occitanie Region was highly attractive, demonstrating a true passion and unconditional commitment to develop e-sports,” he adds.

Located in Aniane, just west of Montpellier, the Esport Village will be one of the training centers for the teams participating in the 2023 League Of Legends LEC finals. They will be able to bring their own trainers.
