Cinemed 2017, honoring Algerian youth and creativity

Information updated on 20/06/18

Over 211 films are on the program for this major event, from October 20 - 28, 2017. Cinemed’s 39th edition honors the young generation of Algerian filmmakers. A highly dynamic film style that is currently invading the international scene. Opportunities for discovery and exchange will be offered to film-loving audiences who also enjoy encounters with directors, actors, and technicians from all around the Mediterranean region.

Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole has chosen culture as a vector for attractiveness, as well as a part of its residents’ daily lives, benefiting from a network of high-performance equipment. Very active since the mid-1950s, members of the Jean Vigo Ciné Club founded Cinemed in 1979. Cinemed continues to showcase the wealth of cultural diversity present in the Mediterranean region.
The program comprises both an official selection of the best works produced during the year, and professional meetings to stimulate future creations, such as a development fund and discussions on effective ways to promote and produce works.
After Greece, Portugal, and Tunisia, it’s Algeria’s turn to take the center stage. Cinemed rejoices in sharing its favorite films with the general public through competitions and panoramas, and contemporary, inventive, and innovative cinema.
The festival, whose jury will be presided by the actress and director Laure Atika, invites audiences to discover premier screenings of many films, and to celebrate its guests of honor, notably Merzak Allouache, a major director in the 1970s and a reference for Algerian cinema.
After years of conflict, Algeria saw the emergence of a “spontaneous generation of highly dynamic cinema that, despite challenges, is sweeping the international scene with a fierce creative desire expressed by many people who will come to share their experience by offering their works and encounters, observations, and revelations regarding a fast-moving country,” explains Christophe Leparc, director of the festival.
Cinemed’s main partners, the City of Montpellier and Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole, support culture and the values it embodies, implementing a strong film and audiovisual policy by: developing an office to welcome film crews to the area; welcoming companies involved with equipment rentals; highlighting local professional talent (actors and technicians); providing structure for the sector by focusing on cultural and creative industries (notably by establishing the Creative City in downtown Montpellier starting in 2020); and promoting the territory’s numerous higher schools in the field.
