More information about the project
What’s this about a Common Food Bank?
The bank consists of a collective budget made up of public and private funds as well as private donations. Its use is governed by a citizen’s food committee, comprising about 50 residents from 12 neighborhoods in the city of Montpellier. The committee has been meeting since October to launch the Monnaie Alimentaire Commune (Common Food Currency), a digital currency that will enable people to make purchases in a food network designated by the committee according to specific quality criteria. As part of the experiment, participants will be able to spend 100€ every month in the network over the course of a year, having contributed to the fund according to their means.
The collective seeks to experiment with new forms of solidarity related to food, notably rooted in the basic human right to food and aligned with the interests of consumers, producers, and other stakeholders in the food system.
Collective food services, a key to sustainable food in the Pays de l’Or area
A program of activities for children and their families will be offered during the 4 Seasons of Agroecology and Sustainable Food event, outside of school hours. The organizers will help the children discover vegetables through games and hands-on activities. Parents, elected officials, and producers will come and share a meal with guests in several cafeterias. The steering committee for the Pays de l’Or Food Project will also meet during the week of the event and launch discussions regarding food issues in the region.
