Excellence in Montpellier sports, with strong results in all disciplines

Information updated on 20/06/18

Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole works hard to encourage all types of sports. Results are positive, such as for world decathlon champion Kevin Mayer, a fan of Montpellier’s Philippidès stadium. Mayer was recently crowned world indoor heptathlon champion in Birmingham.

For track and field, handball, soccer, and even sailing, Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole runs with the national and international leaders. In late April, the Montpellier handball team MHB qualified for the League of Champions Final Four competition in Cologne on May 26-27. MHB is club with the most titles in France and still a contender in the French championships.
Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole encourages a wide variety of sports, from traditional sports such as “tambourin” (5,000 members) to new disciplines such as beach soccer. Sports infrastructure in the Montpellier Métropole area offers everyone a chance to practice the sport of their choice, notably with gymnasiums, swimming pools, arenas, skate parks, and outdoor centers featuring athletic paths, kayaks, bicycles, archery, hiking, jogging, equestrian centers, tennis courts, and much more.
In soccer, the women's Montpellier Hérault Sport Club, 3rd in their division, won the quarter finals of the French Cup, beating Brest 4-0.
Numerous fans continue to follow the exploits of the women’s basketball team, Basket Lattes Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole (BLMA), while Montpellier Hérault Rugby (MHR) fans are still hoping for a French championship title after finishing first in their division for the regular season.
People’s enthusiasm for practicing sports also inspires vocations in the field. For example, the next generation of Montpellier rugby will be represented by four women’s teams (Top 8, Hopefuls, Youth, and Juniors) and seven men’s teams. This year, the MHR training center is also hosting 27 licensed players from 17 to 22 years old (104 players have already been trained, 54 of whom then became professionals, including 33 within MHR).
While the month of June is generally a good time to celebrate the good results of local clubs, this year is also special because renovation of the René Bougnol Palais des Sports will begin in a few weeks. Known for handball, judo, rhythmic and sports gymnastics, karate, and futsal (a form of indoor soccer), this long-standing sports facility has been redesigned by the Montpellier architecture firm Coste, with completion scheduled for September 2018.
