HORIBA Medical, an international major in the Montpellier health sector

Information updated on 20/06/18
HORIBA Medical, specialist in medical analyzers, has been refreshing its product line to strengthen positioning in the international market. Present in 110 countries, the company employs 565 people in Montpellier. It is one of the key stakeholders in the Montpellier Health Capital project launched by Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole.
In 2017, HORIBA Medical will launch three new hematology analyzers, including one very high-end machine designed for large laboratories and technical platforms. The French subsidiary of the Japanese HORIBA group continues to focus on renewing its product line, an initiative that began two years ago. Sylvain Jacquemin, director of innovation, Quality, and regulatory affairs, explains: “The products in our Yumizen line meet today’s new market demands by offering better analytical performance, greater robustness, a higher level of empowerment for laboratory processes, and lower costs for our customers.” The product line refresh should enable HORIBA Medical to regain its strong positions in the European market and reinforce its presence in the United States, the number one market in this field worldwide.
With its 657 employees, HORIBA Medical specializes in manufacturing analyzers and reagents. The company is one of the leading industrial companies in the Montpellier metropolis area. Present in 110 countries, the company is one of the top five manufacturers of hematology analyzers in the world, targeting sales revenue of €119 million in 2016, over 90% of which is generated outside France. HORIBA Medical reinforced its situation in Montpellier by investing €7 million to create a new development and innovation center at the Euromédecine science park.
HORIBA’s presence in Montpellier is an important asset, especially considering that the company has committed itself to the Montpellier Health Capital project launched by Montpellier Métropole. Sylvain Jacquemin highlights: “To the best of my knowledge, Montpellier is the only metropolis that has taken the initiative to position itself this strongly in the health field. Promoting this sector will attract other companies and talent, and continue to feed self-generating momentum. That will help create an environment that is beneficial for companies’ economic development. We also see a direct interest for our company: regulatory requirements related to producing medical devices have become so strict that they are forcing companies like ours to collaborate increasingly with hospital structures and clinical practitioners. Montpellier Health Capital will favor this type of cooperation.”
