Hospitals attracted by Medtech robots

Information updated on 20/06/18
Medtech designs, produces, and commercializes surgical robots. Listed on the stock exchange, the French company has become the leader in cutting-edge surgical robotics over the past several years. Hospitals in Europe, America, and Asia now use Medtech technologies. The company raised $15 million (€13.6 million) in 2015 to support its growth reinforce its teams.
Medtech is a cutting-edge company, specialized in surgical robots for mini-invasive surgery on the spinal column (ROSA Spine) and brain (ROSA Brain). About fifty ROSA robots are now being used in hospitals around the world, including twenty installed during the 2015 tax year.
Founded in 2002 by Bertin Nahum, Medtech has developed in Montpellier, benefiting from support and assistance from the Region for innovative activities.
Beyond support received from Oseo Languedoc-Roussillon (now Bpifrance) and regional incubators, including the Alès Ecole des Mines Incubator and the Business and Innovation Centre (BIC Cap Omega), Medtech chose to establish its operations in the region, in Montpellier in particular, in order to benefit from the dynamic and innovative local ecosystem.
Medtech’s growth then followed the pace of its market authorizations in a highly regulated medical market. In July 2014, the company obtained CE certification for its ROSA Spine platform, enabling sales within Europe. Authorization for ROSA Brain in the Chinese market was granted in October 2014. In May 2015, Australian authorities gave both robots a green light in their market. This year, Medtech has already sold its first ROSA Spine robot in France, to the University Hospital Center in Amiens.
In 2016, Medtech expects to obtain market authorization for its ROSA Spine platform.
The company has given itself the financial and human resources to accompany this growth. Medtech raised $15 million with the Ally Bridge Group (ABG), a global investment group specialized in the medical sector.
Medtech also hired an additional 15 people at its Montpellier headquarters in 2015, which brings its total local staff size to about 40. Another 20 people work at Medtech subsidiaries abroad.
The company generated €6.5 million in revenue in 2014/2015, which is 150% higher than the figure from the previous year.
Medtech started off 2016 with a fresh industry distinction, when the British auditing firm, Frost and Sullivan, recognized the company with its 2016 Excellence in Best Practices award. Bertin Nahum says: “Frost and Sullivan granted us European recognition in 2013. This time it’s worldwide recognition.” This award completes a long list of distinctions earned by the company, which, three years ago, was ranked by a Canadian magazine as being one of the top ten most innovative companies in the world.
