A host of nominations and awards for ArtFX

Information updated on 20/06/18

ArtFX students continue to win industry awards, with over 800 selections in international festivals since the school was created in 2004. Following VES Awards, several former students are in teams for films nominated at the Oscars, in the “Best Visual Effects” category.

In February, two films from ArtFX, a 3D animation, special effects, and video game school in Montpellier, were nominated in the “Best Student Film” category at the Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards, equivalent to the Oscars in the special effects world. For this occasion, six former ArtFX students went to Los Angeles to support their final-year project films, “The Endless” and “Pioneers of the Universe.” The prestigious nomination offered significant international visibility, even if they did not take the awards home this time.
The 3D animated film, Pioneers of the Universe, is already enjoying a great festival career around the world, notably in Russia, Germany, Canada, and elsewhere.
“Nomination for the VES Awards is the culmination of 7 years of studies, dedication, and hard work!”  writes Mikel Zuloaga, co-producer of the short film entitled “The Endless”, on the school’s blog during the award ceremony. Shooting and post-production for 3D effects and live-action filming involved nearly 25 students. “The Endless” won the Digital Creation Genie Awards for the best student VFX/CGI film at the Paris Images Digital Summit in Enghien-les-Bains in January.
On March 4, it was time for the Oscars Created by teams from the Double Negative studio, Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2046” won the Oscar for “Best Visual Effects.” Five former ArtFX students took part in the effort.
Another twenty professionals trained by the school worked on four other Oscar-nominated films: Star Wars: The Last Jedi; Guardians of the Galaxy; Kong: Skull Island; and Planet of the Apes.
The school held an open-house on Saturday, March 10. Running non-stop from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, the day’s program highlighted seven career paths and featured discovery workshops, green-screen shooting demonstrations, and conferences.
