La Compagnie du Vent has wind in its sails

Information updated on 20/06/18
With 22% sales revenue growth in 2015, La Compagnie du Vent, the French pioneer of wind energy, consolidates its position and continues its solar photovoltaic development.
Thierry Conil, CEO of La Compagnie du Vent, explains: “Our sales revenue has seen two-figure growth annually over the past five years, now reaching €67 million. We expect to be able to maintain this pace at least until 2020. Our development will continue, influenced by the Cop 21 context and a national desire to move towards renewable energies.”
Founded in Montpellier twenty years ago, La Compagnie du Vent started out in the land-based wind energy sector. In 2010, the company diversified by focusing intensively on solar photovoltaic solutions, which today represent 15% of its electricity production, a number that should reach 25% by 2020. The company has big plans for this second business activity, which balances out its wind energy operations. In 2015, La Compagnie du Vent invested €115 million in new land-based wind energy and solar photovoltaic equipment.
The company is also working with its parent company, Engie, on a project to develop an offshore wind farm in Port-la-Nouvelle, in the Aude department in the south of France. “We built our first windmill in the Aude area twenty years ago. Today, our Montpellier headquarters is ideally located along the Mediterranean rim, rich in resources for solar and wind energy.”
Leveraging its healthy growth, La Compagnie du Vent is overflowing with projects: The CEO continues: “For some of the photovoltaic farms we are planning to build, we will open up the capital to the public through crowdfunding. We will first experiment with this in 2016, as a test. It’s one way to enable everyone to participate in developing renewable energies and to fight against global warming, as well as to get people involved with energy production directly.”
The company, which employs 150 people, is also accelerating its R&D investment. Among other things, La Compagnie du Vent, plans to work on solar production for electric cars, while pursuing its efforts on battery-based energy storage, and developing a short-term prediction tool for solar generator production. This major challenge precedes the announcement of production to be delivered and sold on the national electrical network.
