A great lineup of winners was present at the “Talents des Quartiers” (Talent in our neighborhoods) competition held at Montpellier’s Corum Conference Center on November 29. The event was organized by BGE, an independent association network that helps startups; and CitésLab, which identifies potential talent in neighborhoods covered by Montpellier’s priority development policy, with support from the City of Montpellier, Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole, the Hérault Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and other partners*.

“With support and encouragement, we want to go even further!” exclaims Mohamed Nassiri, who won the company creation prize, presented by Chantal Marion, vice President of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole, in charge of economic development and attractiveness.

Following a temporary mission in the extreme cleaning sector (disinfecting insanitary facilities or after a death), Mohamed Nassiri  discovered the assistance programs available for creating a company while attending the Place for Creativity forum a year ago. With support from the Montpellier Pic Saint-Loup Initiative, he founded his own cleaning company – D3 Nettoyage.

Rubén Alvarez took a similar path towards success, earning a special mention in the “Creation” category. He opened a restaurant called La Nacional Cantina Mexicaine in Montpellier’s Figuerolles district.

“I wanted to use food as a way to share my country’s culture,” explains the Montpellier resident of Mexican origin, convinced that the “French dream” is possible. “If you have a project, make sure you are surrounded by positive people and don’t give up,” he advises.

"Businesses and the city” award: Nadia Akil and her “Empire des Sans”

Talents des Quartiers also gave awards to two project leaders. Johanès Adedemi and his partner Chamilat Daoud won the “Emerging” category. Their idea is to use wax print cotton fabrics, very popular in Benin and many African countries, for interior home decorations, household linens, and ready-to-wear clothing.

The model creators are preparing to launch their website and have plans to open a store. Earning a special mention in the same category, Ayoub Yani is passionate about hydrographic (water transfer) printing techniques that can be used to decorate everything from large vehicles to small objects. All he  needs now is to find a facility to launch his business.

Nadia Akil won the prize for the City’s Best Female Entrepreneur, awarded by the Nexity Foundation, for her plant-based catering-pastry project, “Empire des Sans” (gluten-free, lactose-free...).

“I fought and climbed the professional ladder,” says Nadia Akil, a resident of Montpellier’s La Mosson district. She wants to help invent “our food for tomorrow – healthy and respecting the environment.”
