Cultural and Creative Industries

Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole is a stronghold for Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs), a veritable source of employment and growth.

An innovation-friendly field focusing on the future!

CCIs are a major lever for economic development throughout France (representing about 1.2 million jobs in 2013, according to an Ernst & Young 2016 study). Montpellier has contributed actively to developing this sector for many years. The momentum in local creativity is particularly visible in film, television, video games, 3D animation, special effects, and design.

CCI companies bring jobs to the Montpellier area, notably with major players such as Ubisoft and France Télévisions, which recently created one of its largest studios in Vendargues (just east of Montpellier) to film its popular daily series “Un si grand soleil”. 180 employees work every day at the 16,000 m² film set in Vendargues, as well as at many sites where the series is filmed around the Montpellier Métropole territory.

To help boost local CCI development, Montpellier Métropole launched Creative City, a 20-hectare district now being renovated, preparing to welcome stakeholders in the CCI world for a successful future.

Stakeholders united around common projects

The presence of large companies, and the vitality of the many local SMEs, VSEs, and startups, make Montpellier a stronghold for the creative industry

Leading companies
The Montpellier area is home to many leaders in digital creation, video games, and 3D animation. Company size in this excellence sector varies, from independents to major international groups. Ubisoft has been present here since 1989. The company is the world’s second-largest production force among video game publishers in terms of its staff size, and is currently building a new 4,500 m² facility. Other companies are also prospering in this particularly favorable ecosystem, including Netia, Digixart Entertainement, Wardenlight Studio, Wild Sheep Studio, In Efecto, Dwarf Animation Studio, Féérik Games, and Isotropix.

Ad hoc training programs
Many school specialized in animation cinema and special effects are flourishing in the Montpellier Métropole area, such as ArtFx, E.artsup, Esbama, Esma (rated by The Rookies as the 3rd best animation school in the world, in the category “Best Animation schools 2018”), IEFAR-Gam, Ipesaa, Objectif 3D, Studio M, and Université Paul Valéry. These training programs lead to real professional vocations, enabling recruitment campaigns by local studios to benefit from a pool of potential employees educated in the area. Increasingly integrating video games in their curriculum, these establishments are a major asset for the territory.
Founded in Montpellier, the Icônes network is a reference for its training in the creative industries sector. The network comprises 2,000 students in France, with four schools: Esma (7th ranked 3D school worldwide, according to Animation Career Review, March 2015), ETPA, Ciné Créatis, and IPESAA. The group also has international ambitions, with offices opened in Montreal in 2017. Montpellier remains a priority development target for the group, with plans to open all four schools in the Creative City.

Associations and active networks
CCI players are growing in numbers and thus participating in the profusion of innovative collaborative events and activities: Illusion & Macadam, Push Start, Effets Stars, Cœur de Ville en Lumière, #PasSansDesign, etc.
Illusion & Macadam, for example, is well known for its work assisting the cultural sector. With 35 employees, the cooperative carries out several missions, notably supporting professionals with administrative aspects, assisting with production, providing advice, and helping to seek funding. Illusion & Macadam is a major player in the Creative City initiative. Notably, the organization will operate a creative “third space”, which is the 1st building to open in the district in late 2018.
