Private Sport Shop in just four years: €40 million in revenue, over 100 employees, and a French Tech Pass

Information updated on 20/06/18
In 2011, Guillaume Bertel and Benoit Durand founded Privatesportshop, an online store that sells sporting goods at attractive prices. At the end of 2015, the company had over 100 employees as well as a French Tech Pass that will help increase its visibility.
Without any external funding, Guillaume Bertel et Benoit Durand decided to combine their skills in sports and e-commerce to launch Privatesportshop.com in 2011.
Four years later, the company now generates annual revenue of €40 million. While mentioning that the company’s entire activity is based at its Castelnau-le-Lez site, Guillaume Bertel adds: “We plan to grow by nearly 40% in 2016, and are counting on hiring another 20 or so people within the next 6 months. All of these jobs will be located in the Montpellier Métropole area.” Hiring is mainly for positions in Purchasing, Marketing, Customer Service, and Shipping.
Privatesportshop owes its success to the quality and relevance of its offering: Benoit Durand explains: “Our customers expect us to offer them the best sporting goods brands at the best prices. We have to make sure to guarantee them exclusive prices that no one else offers. Over 4 million members have signed up on the site. About 90% of them are French. We implement an aggressive Internet-based communication strategy that we combine with more traditional communication actions.” For example, the company invested nearly 400,000 euros for a TV advertising campaign in November (with commercials produced locally by the Montpellier agency, Toscane Prod).
Success was such that the Shipping department is now running at full steam... over 5,000 packages were shipped every day during the holiday season!
These results, and the company’s hyper-growth, qualified Privatesportshop to be selected for the French Tech Pass 2016. Guillaume Bertel explains: “For the past five years, we have been working with our noses to the grindstone. Without Montpellier Métropole’s attention, we would have missed out on this type of opportunity. Teams from Montpellier Métropole noticed us and then assisted us with the process that led to our certification. In particular, the French Tech Pass will help Privatesportshop increase its notoriety in France.” The company also began its international development in late 2014. Two additional versions of the site were launched, in Spain and Italy. The French Tech Pass should also provide significant support for the company’s efforts to expand throughout Europe.
