Laureate of the French Tech Pass in Montpellier in February 2016, among other non-digital companies, Outremer Yachting is now raising its sails.
Specialized in long-range cruising, Outremer Yachting designs, builds, and sells ocean-going catamarans made of composite materials. Located in La Grande Motte, the company now employs 85 people and generates annual revenue of €12 million. A welcome success for a company that has come a long way.
In 2007, Stéphan Constance and Xavier Desmarest, founders of the Grand Large Yachting Group, acquired Atelier Outremer, which had filed for bankruptcy. Atelier Outremer became one of the group’s seven companies. Nine years later, Outremer Yachting is now a laureate of French Tech certification. Xavier Desmarest says: “It is a great opportunity that this label is now opening to companies outside the strictly digital sector. Looking at the other certified companies, we think that it is really very beneficial for us to be part of the group. The strong dynamics driving Montpellier’s French Tech companies is clear. The selective nature of the label represents valuable recognition for us.”
Racing and high-end products
The French Tech label recognizes fast-growing companies – indeed, Outremer Yachting revenue grew from €1.7 million in 2007 to €12 million in 2015 – but there’s more to it than that. Outremer Yachting’s exports are also growing, rising from 25% to reach 75% of its sales, and the company is investing in innovation technology and services: “We build boats, but we also sell pieces of a lifetime. We assist our clients with every aspect of their boating project. We organize both theoretical and practical training. In fact, we help increase clients’ confidence with respect to their boat, as well as their ability to handle it, so that they can completely fulfill their dream.”
The next challenge for Outremer Yachting is to expand its racing and high-end offering. Two new projects are in progress to further this effort: a racing-cruising catamaran, the 4X, which will be presented at the Grand-Motte Multihull Boat Show; and a very large catamaran, the 7X, which will be ready for delivery in 2018.
