Teads joins Altice to counter Google and Facebook

Information updated on 20/06/18
Teads, one of the rising stars in the Montpellier French Tech community, was acquired by the Altice group, whose CEO is Patrick Drahi. Taking effect in May, this merger will further strengthen visibility for Teads in the worldwide video advertising market. It will also promote the convergence of screens, notably across TV, computers, and mobile devices. Staff will be reinforced at the Montpellier site.
Founded in 2011 in Montpellier, Teads shook up the Internet video advertising market in just a few years. The Montpellier startup is notably the inventor of the inRead format, which makes it possible to insert video clips within text articles in a non-intrusive manner. The company today benefits from its status as the “worldwide leader in video advertising”, stating that it works with 94 of the top 100 advertisers in the world. Its acquisition by the Altice group for €285 million will enable Teads to further increase its notoriety. Loïc Soubeyrand, co-founder of Teads and member of the board of directors, explains: “The stakes are considerable. We must counteract Google and Facebook’s influence. Those companies account for 85% of Internet advertising budgets. We must reach a critical size in order to create a third force in the industry. The group resulting from our acquisition by Altice will generate over €1 billion in advertising revenue, which will put us in a position to have an impact on the market.”
The other major issue in this operation is related to the “convergence of screens.” Loïc Soubeyrand points out: “Television and digital platforms still represent separate worlds. Altice targets TV viewers, Teads targets Internet users. By combining our respective know-how, we are going to accelerate convergence. We will then be in a position to offer targeted advertising on television, and create value for publishers and announcers.”
Teads generated 188 million euros in revenue in 2016 (+44%). The company’s headquarters is in Luxembourg, but it is keeping its innovation center in Montpellier, where staff is expected to grow from 70 to 90 people by the end of the 2017.
