Companies committing to local neighborhoods

What do Matooma, Mutelle des Motards, and Drôle de Pain have in common? They are all among the 52 companies – startups, SMEs, groups (see list below) – that signed a convention for applying the Companies and Neighborhoods Charter, co-driven by the French government and Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole since July 2015. The objective is for these companies to participate in concrete actions to promote inclusion and jobs for residents in priority neighborhoods.

Dozens of initiatives are taken every year by the companies, all committed to fighting inequality and discrimination. Initiatives include hosting interns, sponsoring job seekers, supporting company creation, contributing expertise or funding, offering professional immersion opportunities, giving company tours, and more.

The stakes are significant, with 20% of Montpellier residents living in the city’s twelve priority neighborhoods. For people with equivalent job qualifications, these residents’ chances of obtaining an interview is three to six times less than other residents.

Afterwork event: “Revealing our talents”

Dedication by a network of twenty partners is a key factor in maintaining momentum, with leading organizations such as the Foundation for Action Against Exclusion (Face) Hérault, in charge of managing the initiative; as well as other key players involved with inclusion, such as the Hérault Platform for Business Creation (PCFA34), the Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole Local Mission, and the Mediterranean Research, Engineering, and Training Institute (IMEIF). These partners organize meetings with entrepreneurs, job seekers, and young people to increase opportunities for sharing experience, encouraging project leaders, and promoting internships and hiring. Some, such as Cité Citoyenne, help high school students spend a week observing how a company operates. Others, such as IMEIF, work to help women gain qualifications and find jobs.

You don’t have to have a diploma to dive into the entrepreneurial adventure, as demonstrated by the “Revealing our talents” afterwork event held on April 9, under the guidance of the Association for the Right to Economic Initiative (Adie). Company founders from priority neighborhoods met with eleven directors from startups, SMEs, and groups committed to the Companies and Neighborhoods Charter, sharing testimonials and providing some of the keys to successful entrepreneurship.

This was one of the flagship actions in 2019, along with Success Odyssee, which attracted 350 middle school students from priority neighborhoods; and Face Energie Sport, which helps job candidates meet recruiters. 11 to 15 signatory companies of the Companies and Neighborhoods Charter participated actively. Their commitment runs strong!
